If you are new to the UK and don't have a National Insurance number, it is important that you get one. National Insurance is mandatory. Your contribution record dictates your access to, amongst other things, medical care including the entitlement to register with a doctor and seek help from a hospital. It is collected from any salary you earn above £82.00 per week. There is no rebate made on NI contributions, it is totally separate to tax deductions.
You will need to make an appointment for a NI Number interview with your local Department for Work and Pensions office. To find your local office, log onto www.hmrc.gov.uk/home.htm or http://www.dwp.gov.uk/localoffice
